What is sin?
-Doing what God says we must not do.
-Failure to do what God says we must do.
Sin is what separates us from God. God is perfect and righteous and can not allow unrighteousness into His presence. Just 1 sin is all it takes to separate you from God.
All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23
Thankfully, God made a way to restore the relationship with Him. Jesus took all sin upon Himself. He accepted the penalty for sin and paid the price that was required- death. Jesus willingly died for your sin, to offer forgiveness to you, so that if you choose to seek forgiveness and surrender your life to Him, you will be restored to a right relationship with God.
What must I do?
Accept- That you have sinned. Be grieved and humbled and sorry for your sin.
Acknowledge- that Jesus Christ is God, that He humbled Himself and came to earth and was both- fully human and fully God. He lived a perfect life, without sin. He offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice- to pay the penalty for sin, once and for all. He died on the cross, was buried and dead for 3 days. He was raised to life on the 3rd day and is seated on His throne in heaven.
Repent - seek forgiveness for your sins. Turn from your sins and sin no more.
Surrender- In your past, you were in charge of you. You were your own god. Leave your old life and seek new life that God will give. Put on a new heart and a new mind. Learn to walk as a child of God. Surrender your will and your life to Him. His ways are far better than you can imagine. His plan is far greater than you can dream. He is good. He is trustworthy. He loves you dearly. We lose nothing, but gain everything.
Sin is not that big of a deal
What a terrible lie!
Jesus died an excruciating death. It was your sin that put Him there. Do not believe the lie that sin is no big deal.
A child of God CAN NOT go on sinning
1 John 2:3-4 By this, we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commands. The one who says, "I have come to know Him" yet does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in them;
1 John 2:5-6 but whoever keeps His word,in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this, we know that we are in Him: the one who says they abide in Him ought themselves to walk the same manner as He walked.
1 John 3:9 No one who is born of God practices sin
*Here, "born of God" means to be forgiven of sin; to have be "born again" ; to be brought into God's family as a "child of God"

And the term "practices" means a continuation. To sin often and without guilt.
"Well, I will just go ahead and sin and then I will ask forgiveness..."
God looks at the heart. This is NOT the heart and mind of a child of God. This is love for yourself which is opposite of love for God.
A Child of God will flee from sin. They will still mess up, but the Holy Spirit will convict them of sin and they will again repent- seek forgiveness and turn from the sin.
I am not teaching legalism. You do not earn eternal life by living a righteous life. No amount of following the law will earn your way to heaven.

God wants us to have confidence in Him and in our salvation. How do we know? God is letting us know how we can identify within ourselves and how we can identify in others. The books of 1, 2, and 3 John are almost at the end of the Bible, so you may not have gotten that far yet, in reading.
1 John 3:10 By this, the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother.
